Attract What You DO Want
A deer’s sense of smell is estimated to be about 1,000 times better than ours as humans, so if you find that you aren’t seeing as many around as you would hope the next time you go hunting then this next one was picked just for you.
It won’t make you smell better if you generally smell awful, however, but it will mask your pheromones which could be repelling game.
Scent Killer and Nose Jammer make a variety of products for removing the natural pheromones that make up the human stench, including aerosols, oils, and even laundry detergent.
Wildlife Research Center makes Scent Killer, which is well known for the efficacy of these products. You would use this similarly to doe pheromones used to attract bucks, but for the opposite purpose.
We sell a variety of these products at St. Augustine Marina starting at around $10 a bottle and up. We recommend using this product in conjunction with a pheromone scent to enhance its attraction ability.

Repel What You Don't Want
If you are considering coming to Florida and spending any amount of time outdoors for any reason (save for offshore fishing in the intercoastal or Atlanic), you’re going to want to protect yourself from the many critters that will inevitably cause you much pain and suffering.
Thermacell is not like the mosquito repellents in aerosol cans you can purchase at any grocery store.
The creators of this product have combined the use of a dispersion fan and atomizer with rechargeable lithium ion batteries in all their units, sort of like the way an automatic or timer based air freshener works. The units can also be powered using fuel.
The active pest repellant in Thermacell is a synthetic form of allethrin which is found naturally in Chrysanthemum flowers and has proven its capacity for repelling mosquitos in lab studies. The product is EPA approved and independently tested to be safe for humans and pets, provided the user has known allergy to allethrin.
We recommend going to the manufacturer’s website and trying the nifty product finder tool which find the best Thermacell product for you based on how you plan to use it.
Unlike citronella based products and others that claim to be environmentally safe, Thermacell has been field tested by our own staff and patrons where it has proven its efficacy in the field time and time again, making it worth the price.
You can purchase Thermacell at St. Augustine Marina starting at around $35 for a personal unit that can be refilled and used each time you find yourself wandering mosquito infested areas. We carry units for personal and area use as well as accessories such as belt clips (also recommended.)
You may also purchase Thermacell directly from their website.
The Right Tools For The Job
Broadheads. We mentioned them before when we announced that Deer Season was coming up, but we didn’t elaborate too much on what you would want to grab from this section for the hunt.
This may be a common sense recommendation to some – kind of like saying ‘don’t forget to pack your bow’ – but if this is your first deer hunt or first time out in the field and not on the range, you will find that having the right broadheads equipped for the type of game you are hunting is the key to securing the kill.
St. Augustine Marina carries many different types and brands of broadheads in our Bow Center, but for deer season, you will probably be looking at mechanical broadheads like those shown above. To be fair, some may still prefer using fixed broadheads or removable blades as it often comes down to what you have experience using and are comfortable with.
Luckily for you, Outdoor Life has tested various brands and types of broadheads out on the field.
Each was tested for accuracy, durability, sharpness, wound channel, and potential penetration to give you the best idea of what to expect from each and how you can integrate this into your kit.
We carry these brands and others here in our Bow Center and the higher-end mechanical broadheads will cost you around $50-$70 for a pack of 3.
Our staff will help you mount these to arrow shafts if you would like and also have several pre-assembled arrows available for purchase ready to go.
